Sewage outflow

In November, James Sunderland was full of praise for Thames Water, despite their appalling environmental record. As reported by Bracknell News, the water company regularly dumps raw or partially treated sewage into Bracknell’s waterways.

Now, after the Tories have had 14 years to fix our broken sewage system, Mr Sunderland has declared that he is ‘pleased’ the Government has announced a ban on bonuses for underperforming water company bosses.

Bracknell Labour is also in full support of this policy, which was announced by Labour’s Steve Reed, Shadow Environment Secretary, at last year’s Labour Party Conference.

Banning bosses’ bonuses is a good start, but it won’t be enough to clean up our waterways by 2030.

If Rishi Sunak and James Sunderland are too tired to come up with their own policies, they might like to implement the full package of measures proposed by Labour. That would include:

  • Automatically fining companies every time they illegally dump sewage into our waterways
  • Introducing personal criminal liability for persistent sewage dumping
  • Forcing companies to monitor water outlets properly
  • Putting water companies in special measures until they clean up their act

Or, they could admit they have no plan to get Britain back on track, do the right thing, and call a general election.

Labour is ready to get tough on water company bosses and clean up the Tory sewage scandal. A vote for Labour is a vote for a fresh start.
